One of Queen's student teachers, Catherine Creighton, has been recognised for her excellence in teaching having picked up the Student Teacher Award from the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI), at Queen's annual Presentation of Prizes and Certificates for its Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).

Catherine was chosen by an interview process which included a short presentation. Commenting on her award, she said "It's a great honour to accept this award. I find it a huge confidence boost for me beginning my career as a teacher and I look forward to sharing it back in the classroom".

Organised by the School of English at Queen's, three prizes are awarded annually at the presentation as a result of high achievement in the PGCE teaching course. They are: the Elizabeth M. Fulton Prize, the Kildare Place College Prize and the GTCNI Prize. GTCNI chooses one winner from amongst the winners of the Elizabeth M. Fulton Prize to receive the Student Teacher Award.

Commenting on the awards, Sally McKee, Chair, GTCNI said, "The Council is very pleased to initiate this student teacher award across all our higher education providers. It demonstrates the excellence within and our support for initial teacher education providers. It is also an acclamation of our faith in student teachers who are the future of the profession in Northern Ireland."
