GTCNI Lecture 2015
Beyond Improvement ... was presented on 17th September

an agenda for policymakers and the teaching profession

Presented by: Professor HC Donaldson CB MA MEd FRSA

Professor Graham Donaldson is an influential educational adviser to governments and NGOs and has led major educational reviews in Scotland (Teaching Scotland’s Future, 2010) and Wales (Successful Futures, 2015). He began his career as a teacher in Scotland before becoming a member of Her Majesty’s Inspectors of Education in 1983 and head of the Scottish Inspectorate in 2002. For the next eight years he was also chief professional advisor on education to the Scottish Government. In 2011 he joined Glasgow University and is currently a professor at the Robert Owen Centre for Educational Change.

Professor Donaldson argues that the tendency for education policy to focus on incremental performance improvement, often against short-term targets, can divert from the fundamental purposes of education and that the challenge is to set improvement within a longer-term vision.

“Teachers will need to be more than excellent practitioners, vital though that is, but rounded educational professionals who are not simply reacting to external pressures but will be the engines of change and the guardians of excellence. We need, therefore, to create the conditions within which a reflective, creative and agile teaching profession can play its full part.”
