Local Belfast Metropolitan College lecturer - Grainne McGowan - has won a BEST Award

Ned Cohen (GTCNI) presents Grainne McGowan (Belfast Metropolitan College)

The General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI), proudly presented Grainne McGowan with a BEST Award at the recent major showcase for creativity and innovation across Northern Ireland’s 6 colleges. The BEST Awards focus on outstanding practice in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.

Ned Cohen – FE Officer at GTCNI and BEST judge commented “Grainne is clearly passionate about her job and developing her students to the highest level. She thoroughly deserves the award of ‘Supportive Lecturer Award’, which we sponsor as part of the wider Colleges NI BEST Award programme.  Celebrating excellence is central to GTCNI’s core principles and we are delighted to have been involved for the last two years.”

Grainne is the course co-ordinator for the Fashion Management Degree and she has actively involved her students in the BEST Awards to expose them to experiences of showcasing their work and meeting key industry players to build on their confidence and business skills.  Currently Grainne has two BTEC students competing in the World Skills Visual Merchandising Competition and they will take part in the next heat in Birmingham in November 2015.   She has also supported students to enter the Diet Coke Designer of the Year and Student Wedding Designer of the Year as she continues to actively showcase the local talent at the Belfast Metropolitan College.
