Research Lesson Study 2012

Research Lesson Study 2012

A recent policy seminar identified the very positive impact of the first two years of a project in Northern Ireland to develop Lesson Study.

The Council has spent two years since 2010 developing Lesson Study in schools across the country in collaboration with Queen’s University Belfast and LSUK’s Pete Dudley. Gerry Devlin has led the development project for the GTCNI and Debie Galanouli and Professor John Gardner led the research work at Queen’s.

Over 30 schools have participated in the development and research programme and at least two dissemination conferences have been held in 2011 and 2012 to share the experiences of the schools involved. A wide variety of schools have been involved in the developments as have teacher training colleges. Schools have overwhelmingly found the work rewarding for teachers and in terms of improved learning.

So far two research papers have been published as a result of this work. The GTCNI recently held a policy seminar for representatives of schools, the Northern Ireland Department of Education, Leadership College, teacher unions, universities and teacher training organisations.

These projects are set to continue for another year at least.
