Education Minister launches strategic forum

Education Minister, Caitríona Ruane, has launched a new forum to help shape and influence policy development and strategic planning before decisions are made.

The Strategic Planning and Policy Development Forum is made up of representatives from trade unions, education organisations and the Department of Education.

Minister Ruane said: "The establishment of the Strategic Planning and Policy Development Forum is an indication of the importance my Department and I place on working with the key partners across the education sector. The Forum will play an important role in helping my Department develop new policies with the overall aim of raising educational standards.

"The Forum will not replace existing structures but will help to foster collaborative working through a team approach. It will engage on a range of issues, including those affecting the workforce.

"We have recently published the draft budget proposals for the next four years and engagement with the trade unions and other organisations will help shape the final proposals. We are in a difficult financial climate and difficult decisions will have to be taken. I have regularly said my aim is to protect jobs and frontline services as far as possible. I will continue to put the case for additional funding for education and urge those impacted by the budget to support my efforts."
