Research Report On Teaching And Learning Welcomed

NI Executive

Employment and Learning Minister, Danny Kennedy, has welcomed a report which reviews the outcomes of a major UK research programme into learning.

The report on the Teaching and Learning Research Programme (TLRP), developed by Queen’s University’s Dr Despina Galanouli, considers the implications of the wider UK research for Northern Ireland. Dr Galanouli was appointed as a Research Fellow by the Department for Employment and Learning in conjunction with the Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Department of Education.

Commenting on the report, the Minister said: "My Department recognises that access to high quality, up to date research is an essential component in both shaping and successfully delivering upon its strategic priorities. I welcome that my Department has been able to engage effectively with the ESRC, through the appointment of the Research Fellow, to draw on its extensive research outputs in areas of relevance to Northern Ireland."

The report sets out a series of findings including those projects which relate to improving the quality of provision in post compulsory education, skills and workforce development and widening participation in post-compulsory education.

The Minister concluded: "This report provides a welcome addition to the growing evidence base which my Department is developing to ensure that policy making in Northern Ireland becomes increasingly effective. Outputs are already informing the development of the Consultation documents for the Higher Education and Widening Participation Strategies."
