A new publication that celebrates teacher professionalism has been launched by the General Teaching Council. Teaching: The Reflective Profession explains the GTC's views on the purposes of education and sets out the knowledge, skills and attributes required by those seeking recognition and registration as teachers.

The publication will be distributed to all 27,000 registered teachers in Northern Ireland. It brings together the GTC's code of values and professional practice, the charter for education and a coherent statement of teacher competences.

The Council says the publication therefore, offers a "comprehensive discourse which sets out the ethical basis and moral purposes of our work, as well as a clear understanding of the practice of teaching". It is hoped it will facilitate discussion and allow for teachers, acting in communities of practice, to more readily share experiences and understandings about "the complex and value-laden process of education".

The publication of the booklet is the outcome of a process began in 2003 when the Department of Education launched a review of teacher education. "During a period of unprecedented change within education it is important that we remember that all change is effectively delivered by those in the classroom, namely our teachers," Eddie McArdle, GTCNI Registrar said.

"This document will not only inform the work of those engaged in teacher education but will enable teachers, collectively or individually, to reflect on their practice and identify their development needs".
