"Strong education system is based on committed teachers" - Ruane

Education Minister Caitríona Ruane has told teachers and lecturers that their commitment and dedication plays an important role in the lives of young people.

The minister was speaking at the annual conference of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers on Friday evening in Belfast.

Speaking at the event, Caitríona Ruane said; "I visited many schools before, and since becoming education minister and I aim to visit more. I have been struck by the numerous examples of the excellent work of dedicated teachers. I can honestly say that we have much to be proud of in our schools, and in the work of our teachers."

She has invited teachers to work with the Department for the betterment of young people and emphasised her commitment to equality in education and the challenges faced. The Minister added: "Equality must be the cornerstone of our education system and equality will be my guiding principle during my term as Minister for Education. We must pool our expertise together to help create an education system where every school is a good school and children leave the education system creative, confident and articulate ready to face higher education or the world of work.

"It is an immense and exciting challenge. This challenge involves you. I came here tonight to meet you and to emphasis how much I want to work in co-operation with you so that we can achieve the best possible outcomes for our young people, and to develop the careers and opportunities of your members."
