St Mary's University College has been named one of the 10 best teacher training institutions in Britain and Northern Ireland.

In its guide to courses beginning in September, the Guardian newspaper said the west Belfast college was the eighth best of 66 institutions for undergraduate study.

Courses were rated based on teaching quality, feedback, spending per student, student/staff ratio, job prospects, entry qualifications and "value added" - comparing students' individual degree results with their entry qualifications. St Mary's had a value added score of 10 out of 10 while 81 per cent said they were satisfied by the quality of teaching - as rated by final-year students in the National Student Survey. Stranmillis University College was selected as the 22nd best provider of undergraduate teacher education courses.
