Teacher training review launched

02-06-2008

30/05/2008 :: Northern Ireland :: The Irish News

A review of teacher training provision has been launched by the assembly's Committee for Employment and Learning.

The move follows the ann-ouncement of changes to the funding of the two teacher training institutions - Stran-millis and St Mary's univer-sity colleges in Belfast.

The colleges receive government block grants which are not directly based on student population.

The Department for Em-ployment and Learning, however, is working on developing a new model linked to numbers. Any reduction will therefore mean less money.

In 2008/09 there will be 594 teacher training places in the north's institutions - a sharp fall from 699 this academic year and 786 in 2006/07.

Committee chairwoman Sue Ramsey said members were concerned that since March, when they were made aware of the planned changes, the process had moved "rapidly with no opportunity to consider important issues" - an opportunity the review was intended to provide.
