Joining of services to improve unions' skills supply

12/05/2008 :: Northern Ireland :: The Irish News

The Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL) and the Association for College Management (ACM) are to give members of both unions access to the services provided by the other.

The joint venture, due to be launched in the autumn, will be called the Association of Managers in Education (AMiE), and will be run and managed by the ACM.

It is not a merger of the two unions, although this may be a possibility in the future if ACM members vote in favour.

AMiE's board will be made up of members of both unions. Final details of how AMiE will operate will be decided over the coming months.

Both unions will benefit from access to all ATL's training and publications, member benefits; and support from offices in Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

"This is great news for ATL members, particularly in further education," ATL Northern Ireland director Mark Langhammer said.

"With the amalgamation of 16 colleges into six regional colleges, this is an important juncture to improve the skills supply to the Northern Ireland economy.

"It will provide an increased, coherent and fully supported representational role to senior educational professionals in Northern Ireland."
