One of Northern Ireland's two dedicated teacher training colleges could merge with Queen's University.

Members of the Assembly Employment and Learning Committee have been informed Stranmillis College in south Belfast is considering the merger following a fall in the number of students they will train.

College authorities and Employment and Learning Minister Sir Reg Empey were accused of keeping employees and Assembly members in the dark about the merger.

Democratic Unionist MLA Jimmy Spratt said: "Employees in Stranmillis have raised their concerns with me in recent weeks about a lack of consultation.

He said: "It seems the approach taken has been one of keeping stakeholders in the dark."

It is understood the talks between the college authorities and Queen`s University are still at an early stage.

However the college has denied the site will be sold off to developers as Queen`s University would locate all its teaching courses there if the merger goes ahead.
