Rights to be taught in classroom

20/02/2008 :: Northern Ireland :: BBC News

A new initiative aimed at teaching primary school children about their human rights is to be launched later.

Books developed by Amnesty International and teaching unions will be introduced at about 100 schools.

The scheme, which will also operate in the Republic, will be launched by the Education Minister Catriona Ruane.

Amnesty's Northern Ireland director Patrick Corrigan said he hoped it would help children "stand up for their own human rights and those of others".

"People sometimes think about human rights in the global scale and human rights abuses and of course that's what Amnesty is best known for, but this is also about rights in the classroom, rights in the family..." said Mr Corrigan.
