Education minister Caitriona Ruane will today join principals, teachers and classroom assistants at the opening of the Irish-medium education sector's annual conference.

The conference at Colaiste Feirste in Belfast is being by organised by Comhairle na Gaelscolaiochta (C na G), the council for the sector.

Its theme is 'Towards excellence in Irish-medium education - the collaborative approach', which recognises the growing importance of partnership in education and the challenges facing Irish-medium schools.

"The challenges arising from change in education in Northern Ireland are unprecedented and daunting for all who seek to provide for children," Sean

O Coinn, C na G chief executive, said.

"For the Irish-medium system, because of our size and the age profile of our staff, collegiality and interdependence are fundamental if we are to continue to meet the needs of our children."
