21/01/2008 :: Northern Ireland :: The Irish News

The Promoting Active Learning in Essential Skills Numeracy conference was part of an LSDA NI project that has been disseminating research-based teaching approaches to maths that lead to deeper understanding of mathematical concepts.

Speakers included Dr Malcolm Swan, associate professor and reader in mathematics education, University of Nottingham and Francis Bove, coordinator of the London Mathematics Challenge.

Delegates were tasked with developing more challenging teaching methods and to help learners adopt more active learning approaches.

"We have a growing economy and a desire to develop our competitive edge at a global level.

To do this we need a highly skilled workforce in Northern Ireland who are proficient in numeracy and mathematics," Trevor Carson, LSDA NI director said.

"We want to help learners to adopt a more active approach to learning maths."
