Nipsa to suspend strike action

04/12/2007 :: Northern Ireland :: The Irish News

Nipsa classroom assistants are to suspend their long-running strike action.

However, there will be more picketing today and a protest meeting at Stormont involving some of the public service union's 3,000 members.

The decisions were taken after union leaders consulted members at the weekend.

Three other unions affected have agreed to accept a pay deal offered last September as compensation for changes to conditions.

Nipsa has been demonstrating for months over changes to pay and conditions for new workers involving post regrading and methods of calculating salaries.

In September the five education board employers offered an extra £15 million for one-off payments in recognition of chan-ged work practices.

On Friday employers and unions held a joint summit and the majority of workers agreed to accept the deal, with only Nipsa dissenting.

They have taken 17 days of strike action and officials have warned that further protests have not been ruled out.
