'Opportunity for all children in education'

10/05/2007 The Irish News

New education minister Caitriona Ruane yesterday underlined her commitment to providing equality of opportunity for all children in the education system.

The minister was speaking as she undertook her first series of engagements at schools in counties Antrim and Derry.

During a visit to St Pius X College, Magherafelt, Ms Ruane said there were many challenges ahead.

"Over the past number of weeks I have had the opportunity to meet with many in the education community and to listen to their hopes for the future," she said.

"Our education system needs to create confident, creative and articulate children; children who will be able to fully avail of the opportunities today's global economy provides them.

"I also believe that we need to make these opportunities available for all; not just the academically gifted."

The visit also saw her meet staff and students at Belfast Royal Academy, Riverside Special School in Antrim and Hazelwood Integrated Primary school in north Belfast.
