The General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland is the statutory, independent body for the teaching profession and is dedicated to enhancing the status of teaching and promoting the highest standards of professional conduct and practice.
The General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (the Council), is inviting you to respond to our online consultation which seeks the views of teachers and other stakeholders on how the Council intends to meet its statutory obligations enabling teachers to regulate their profession, and in particular, to deal with misconduct within the profession.
This marks an important change in that, for the first time, the teaching profession itself will have the privilege and responsibility for self-regulation. The Council therefore wants to ensure openness and transparency with respect to the proposed processes through which these powers will be exercised.
There are four documents accompanying this consultation
1. A background document explaining how the Council was granted these powers and how our draft conduct rules were developed
2. The GTCNI Draft Conduct Rules
3. The General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (Registration of Teachers) (Amendment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2015
4. The Consultation Response Questionnaire online OR
The Consultation Response Questionnaire - hardcopy download
The Council will consider all the responses to the consultation. This will help us ensure that we can meet our statutory regulatory responsibilities in the most efficient way possible while, at the same time, maintaining the confidence of the teaching profession and wider public interest.
We look forward to your questionnaire response feedback which should be completed and returned by 6 March 2017.
