The Stranmillis University College Essay Competition, sponsored by the General Teaching Council of Northern Ireland, is an annual competition for Year 13 pupils, designed to encourage pupils to think and write creatively on topical educational issues.

“As a member of the judging panel, each year I am so impressed by the insight, innovation and creativity our young people demonstrate in the essays they submit.” says Dr Noel Purdy, Director of Research and Scholarship at Stranmillis University College. “Last year’s winner, Laoise McWilliams from Assumption Grammar School, Ballynahinch, impressed the judges with her original approach and insightful ideas in response to Albert Einstein’s famous comment that “I never teach my pupils. I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn.”    Over the past few years, topics for the essay have stirred the imagination but, perhaps more than ever, I’m looking forward to reading what the young people have to say on this year’s topic If I was Minister of Education at Stormont, I would…Let's see what new educational policies are put forward!” stated Dr Noel Purdy.

Commenting on the launch of this year’s competition, David Canning, Chair of the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland said:  “GTCNI is delighted to again support the Stranmillis Essay Competition 2018. The thought-provoking title is certain to act as a creative catalyst for another outstanding competition.”

The competition is open to all Year 13 pupils in Northern Ireland. Essays will be judged in terms of their level of understanding, depth of insight, strength of argument, originality and quality of writing.  The winning entry is awarded a prize of £200, sponsored by the General Teaching Council of Northern Ireland.  The closing date for the essay competition is Monday 5th February 2018.
