The General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland is the statutory, independent body for the teaching profession and is dedicated to enhancing the status of teaching and promoting the highest standards of professional conduct and practice.

Ivan Arbuthnot, GTCNI Chair
GTCNI are pleased to announce the election of Ivan Arbuthnot as the GTCNI Chair who succeeds Sally McKee. He has been a committed member of the GTCNI since its creation in 2003.
Ivan brings a vast teaching experience to the post having started his career in Dunmurry High School in 1973. He taught Geography, History, Citizenship and Sociology and became Head of Social Studies in 1977. Between 1984 and 1987, Ivan worked with Sister Anne O’Shea as an 11 – 16 Programme Field Officer for schools in the SEELB area.
He moved to NEELB as a Secondary Education Officer in 1988 and, in 1989, became Principal of what was then Holywood High School. In 1998, the school transformed to become Priory Integrated College, Holywood; a controlled integrated 11 – 18 post-primary college. Ivan has been Principal there for twenty one years.
For the past three years, he has been working with the Northern Ireland Council for Integrated Education as Entitlement Framework Development Officer. He was President of NAHT (NI) in 2009.
