Education welfare officers who are members of the Northern Ireland Public Service Alliance are to take part in industrial action from today.

The officers work with schools to try to resolve truancy problems.

Union assistant secretary Alison Millar said the officers would not cover staff absences, take on new cases or attend case conferences.

The officers are unhappy that no new pay deal has been agreed after a six-year pay dispute.
