Registration with the Council

Introduction

The General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland is the independent regulatory body for the teaching profession, established by the Education (NI) Order 1998. Registration is required for all teachers, including peripatetic teachers, working in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland. Employing authorities are required to ensure that they only employ teachers that are registered with the GTCNI.

If you wish to be employed as a teacher in a grant-aided school in Northern Ireland you must be registered with the Council in accordance with Article 35 (3) of the Education (NI) Order 1998.

Registration for those teachers undertaking ITE in Northern Ireland

If you are undertaking a programme of Initial Teacher Education (ITE) in Northern Ireland - University of Ulster, Queens University Belfast, St Mary's University College, Stranmillis University College, and the Open University - staff from the Registration Team will visit your 'Institution' to distribute and collect application forms. These visits take place in the December to March period of each academic year. If you have not received an application form please download, complete and submit the appropriate application form.

Registration for DE 'Recognised' Teachers

If you have already been awarded 'eligibility to teach' by the Department of Education, but for some reason have not registered with the Council, please download, complete and submit the appropriate application form.

Registration for Teachers educated/trained within the UK

If you are currently a student teacher or if you have obtained your teaching qualifications in England, Scotland or Wales, and wish to teach in Northern Ireland, please download, complete and submit the appropriate application form.

Registration for teachers educated/trained within the EU, EEA or Switzerland

The Council is the designated 'competent authority' in Northern Ireland, for the purposes of implementing the EU Directive 2005/36/EC. If you have obtained your teaching qualifications/professional recognition in the EU, EEA or Switzerland and wish to teach in Northern Ireland, please download, complete and submit the appropriate application form.
