Access to Information on the Register

Data Protection

The data supplied by a registered teacher and the data relating to a teacher held on the Register will be processed in accordance with the functions of The General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland, as defined in the Eduction (NI) Order 1998, and in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998 and the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (Registration of Teachers) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2004.

The Council will also use this data to undertake statistical analysis on an anonymous basis to inform policy development and to enable it to ensure the promotion of equality of opportunity and diversity within the teaching profession.

Registered Teachers

All teachers will have full access to the information held on their registered teacher record. Requests from teachers for confirmation of their registration status or a full print out of their record can be made by contacting the Registration Team.

Employers

Employing Authorities and Schools can check a teachers' registration status by contacting the Registration Team by phone, fax or e-mail. Employers can receive further information on a registered teacher by making a request in writing to the Registration Team. General Public

Access to the Register of Teachers is not limited to teachers and employers. Any member of the public is entitled to be told whether or not a teacher is registered with the GTCNI. If you wish to check a teachers' registration status contact the Registration Team.

Keeping your record up to date

The Council is committed to making its Register of Teachers as up to date and accurate as possible. All registered teachers are encouraged to update their teacher record on an ongoing basis as and when required. If you change school, home address or your name, please inform the Registration Team immediately. They will advise you on the required procedures to amend/update your details.
